This year I will be teaching classes at KublaCon in San Francisco for the sixth year running! They must like me or they wouldn’t keep inviting me back to teach. This year I’ll be teaching Object Source Lighting on Saturday morning (May 25, 9 am) and Blending Techniques on Sunday (May 26, 4:45 pm). Details below the fold.
- Object Source Lighting
Lighting effects can produce amazing results when done well, but are extremely tricky to get right. In this class, I’ll provide my tips for creating strong lighting effects, including:- Placement of light sources for best effect.
- How to make it look like a colored light source is producing illumination (it’s not as simple as just glazing!)
- How different colors of light interact with different colors of material.
Hands-on class, based on my OSL tutorial. [2 hours]
- Blending Techniques
In this hands-on class, we will learn and practice three different blending techniques:- Two-brush blending
- Glazing
- (depending on class preference) Either wet-in-wet blending, or using texture (stippling, hatching) to create blends
[2 hours]
If you’re a newer painter, I would highly recommend the Blending Techniques class, which will cover not just the technical aspects of blending, but also the how and the why of using light and shadow contrast to give your figures volume and maximize their impact. This is fundamentally important to all miniature painting. More experienced painters will likely also get something from the blending techniques class, and are welcome as well.
All levels of painters are welcome in the Object Source Lighting class, if you’re interested in learning how to create the illusion of light sources on your miniature through paint alone. This is one of my favorite techniques in miniature painting, and can be great fun and very impressive once you get the hang of it.
I will also be teaching at ReaperCon, and will announce the details here closer to the event.
Hope to see you in my classes!
